Qatar National Day History & National Symbolism Qatar National Day (Al-Yawm al-Watani al-Qatari) is observed on December 18 each year and stands as the country’s most significant national celebration. Its significance traces back to 1878, when Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani assumed leadership and successfully unified the tribes across the Qatari Peninsula. Known as the founder of Qatar, he laid the groundwork for the modern political system by defending the region from external forces and strengthening tribal unity. Because of this, December 18 is also widely recognized as Founder’s Day. The celebration was not always held in December.
